Why did NO USA currency have “In God We Trust” in 1950? Was it a typo? God took a vacation?
Question by dartagnon p: Why did NO USA currency have “In God We Trust” in 1950? Was it a typo? God took a vacation?
I have noticed that “In God We Trust” is NOT on any of the bills of any denomination in 1950. I always thought that it was because I was born that year and they realized that I was their new ***. I don’t dare say it b/c I know you guys will rip me to shreds for my blasphemy and arrogance and God knows what else.
But check your 1950 bills and you will notice on the back that the motto is missing!
Why?
To be clear here … the bills BEFORE 1950 … 1930′s, 1940′s, 1949, 1951 and on ALL had In God We Trust on them but not the ONE YEAR 1950! You say it was McCarthy that caused that? OR religious separation which turns out NOT to be written anywhere but was just a “convenient adherence” according to many of you and others?
I still don’t know why 1950 was the ONLY year without the motto. It had to be a mint typo or something or someone dropped the dies or ???? More detail is necessary. And I will go to that link that someone here suggested and see if that has the answer but it sounds vague.

LikeDislikeBoth “In God We Trust” and “One Nation…Under God” – which are both often pointed to as evidence the Founding Fathers meant this to be a Christian country – did not even appear until the 1950s!
This was because McCarthy threatened any Congressman who voted against their enstatement with being labelled a Communist, and losing their jobs and having their lives destroyed.

This byline was added, just as that line, “under God” was added to the Pledge of Allegiance during the 1950′s. My father told me that it was and adjustment to get used to this new phrase.
