What do you think of my proposal to solve the “violation notice” problem on Yahoo?
Question by cancelcodeyellow: What do you believe of my proposal to solve the “violation discover” problem on Yahoo?
Yahoo peer evaluation system:
1. Bring back the “Thumbs up/down” attribute for questions. Keep this characteristic on the answers, also.
2. Whenever a question gets, oh let’s say 7 thumbs down, the complete question disappears. We are rid of the question, and its author has wasted points being rude/racist/intolerant/stupid/a spammer/or garden variety troll. No violation recognize necessary, since the author will either straighten up or starve from lack of points.
three. Seven thumbs down also removes an answer with the same qualities. Right here too, a program of point deduction might more effectively police the site than violation notices. It would also solve the problem of stalkers, unless you have a gang of 7 stalkers gunning for you…in which case, you have manufactured a lot of enemies!
How the heck would this be “Big Brother?” We would be policing each and every other.
Also, it would replace the abused “star” attribute, which is getting employed to brown-nose
the asker into chosing the starring person as “finest answer”- yuk!
Properly, let’s uncover out. I will puposely NOT select a “greatest answer” in order to give the Yahoo populace an opportunity to vote on the very best answer right here. So come back in a couple days and vote, everyone! Thx.

It really is sounds greater than what they do now. I’ll give it a try.

I don’t know why they took away the thumbs up/down feature on the question being asked, I rather enjoyed that one.

LikeDislikeWon’t work. Any question on homosexuality, religion, politics, etc…. will automatically get deleted under your proposal because they are controversial subjects that are sure to offend others even when they DON’T violate Yahoo guidelines.
Your idea smells of “Big Brother” control. The “left wing” will give a thumbs down to all the conservative-slant Q&As to get them deleted. The “right wing” will give a thumbs down to all the liberal-slant Q&As to get them deleted. So there won’t be a question or answer left out there! Not a good idea.

LikeDislikeI like it. It seems when a question or answer is reported, it just stays anyhow. I’ve seen offensive answers with 10 plus thumbs down because it is sick or racist. And it never goes away. I think if it has 7 thumbs down, it has a problem, and should go away.

LikeDislikeUnfortunately, the problem is not a “gang” of 7 stalkers, but trolls with 7 or more identities on here. Many of these folks run multiple accounts to stay ahead of the violation game, and this would REALLY bring the troublemakers out in “multiple identity” force, just so that they CAN eliminate someone using their multiple thumbs!
It’s a nice concept, but as with so many possible solutions, it is based on the premise that people are, at least minimally, following the rules on here — and we all know that is not true, sadly!

LikeDislikeI’m not sure that would work.
I have the feeling people would give a “Thumbs Down” to any question they didn’t like, not necessarily because it violated any rules.
For example, in the Religion section, if someone posted a question challenging the existence of god, while some would take the high road and debate the question like is intended, others would simply “Thumbs Down” it so that a view other than theirs wasn’t expressed.

LikeDislikeI don’t think it should be automatically deleted. Any partisan question, or controversial one would be automatically deleted under your scheme.
Maybe give people the option to filter questions (you can do this with answers.)
So I think your cure is worse than the disease. I’ve had lots of unpopular questions (and answers), but only two violations.

LikeDislikeIt wouldn’t be any different than it is now. You’d still have trolls with their many accounts running amok. In fact, there are currently trolls that automatically give everyone that answers certain people’s questions thumbs down.
Something has to be done, for sure; but neither the flag (report abuse) or the thumbs down have worked. :-/ Good try tho! ♥

LikeDislikeWhile your ‘proposal’ seems to be ‘workable’ I don’t think that on a site that can be seen by MILLIONS of people that any ‘seven’ not liking a question is ‘enough’ to ‘violate’ the asker … and that is the same for the ‘answerer’ … and since nothing would be ‘done’ to the person receiving the ‘violation’ that way, they could just go ‘on and on and on and on’ and never stop … because they probably don’t even look at ‘thumbs down’ as being ‘a bad thing’ and may see it as ‘being good’ if what they want to do is to get people ‘mad’ at them.

LikeDislikePeople thumb for all the wrong reasons, so it would make things worse.
Currently, when a post of your is removed for violation, you lose 10 points. (You say point deduction might be better; they already do that.)
The answer is to properly enforce the Guidelines — if they’d do that, there’s be no problem.
