Strange letter in the mail – does anyone know what this is?
Question by energized: Strange letter in the mail – does anyone know what this is?
I received a letter today and want to know if it is legit or if it is a scam. It says,
“Due to extreme economic conditions currently affecting the mortgage and real estate markets, a thorough review of all mortgage related insurance programs has become critical to ensure that you obtain and are continually maintaining sufficient insurance coverage levels needed to avoid any and ALL potential foreclosure scenarios. We ask that you complete and return this card in the envelope provided so that an evaluation can be performed promptly. Your response must be received within 10 days from the date of this notice”
It has my mortgage balance on it, an nla number (whatever that is) and a bunch of bar codes.
It asks for date of birth, sex, smoking or non, phone numbers & first name.
Does anyone know what this is all about?
Oh, and the return envelope has the following address:
M.S.I. Processing Unit
PO Box 11329
San Bernardino, CA 92423-9914
No I’m not in default or anything like that. Everything is good.
Thanks for the info, I am convinced this is a scam now & am going to shred it.

What is the reason for them to send you that mail?
Are yo uin foreclosure or missed your payments or trying to modify your loan.
Usually no legit company will ask for your dob sex or any other info like that.

LikeDislike1) It’s nothing to do with the homeowner insurance if your house has to be foreclosed.
2) Many companies can easily get your mortgage info with the balance of it.
3) Take a look at the Letter head and see if you recognize the name of the company. Only response if you know and trust them.
4) If still have questions, call them to find out BUT make sure not to disclose your personal info such as SSN.

LikeDislikeSounds like a company trying to generate business by sending you something that looks official. If they were legit, they would already have all that information.

LikeDislikeI got that letter too – almost fooled me. The way you know it’s a fake is… 1) no company name and number, 2) All personal info (loan blance, bank, etc.) is publicly available, 3) Address goes to a P.O. Box with no connection to your bank, 4) Your bank would not print generic foreclosures statistics on the back of mailing, 5) Small print at bottom reveals the legal disclosure (but as secretively worded as possible) – saying “The processing division is not directly affiliated with the funding institution”, and 6) Foreclosure insurance, if it exists, is not required by law like disaster insurance, so the explanation given does not make sense.
This is the most deceptive piece of mail I’ve ever seen. They try to scare you by printing in bold “Your response must be received within 10 days from the date of this notice”. Whatever insurance they are selling, they are very aggressive and should be reported.
