Question by Eilean Ban: Has anyone ever watched Dogs 101 on Animal Planet?
I’ve seen it a few times, but I really never paid that much attention to it. But last week I saw that Toy Fox Terriers (my breed) were going to be featured so I thought I’d watch. All I have to say is where the heck do they get their info!? So many times I was like “what the h*ll!” as they were spouting off all this incorrect info. Here’s a list of what I noticed:

“Toy Fox Terriers are Tri-colored dogs…”-No, TFTs can be black tri, chocolate tri, tan and white (the color of my TFT) or black and white, all of which are accepted colors in the standard.

“TFT’s are one of the few breeds who don’t have to have their tails docked, it comes naturally that way” NO! A very small minority are naturally bob tailed, but 95% have to have their tail docked.

“The AKC states that one of the traits of the TFT is that they watch TV” Okay, I have never heard of this. I know the AKC states that they will curl up with you while YOU watch TV…

“TFTs have low exercise requirements and are low energy” Yeah right! TFTs need a much higher level of exercise than most Toy breeds and are one of the most high energy toy breeds.

Things they also got wrong were breed history (they never rode in saddle bags and were not from the combination of dogs they said they were), what they’re predisposed to (I have never heard of them being predisposed to mange and they have food allergies, not skin allergies like the they stated).

Anyway, you get the picture.

My question is for anyone else whose breed has ever been featured on the show, did they butcher your breed as bad as they did mine? Or did they just get totally lazy when they were doing their TFT research?

(BTW if you don’t know if your breed has been on the show you can go to Animal Planet’s website and watch clips from each breed they’ve featured)
Schnauzer Mom: OMG they’re doing designer dogs! WTF!? I think I just threw up in my mouth a little too…
Lui’s my boy: That would be an awesome idea to do one on shelter dogs! And I just looked it up, apparently animal planet only uses “reputable breeder’s dogs” as examples on their show…so where in the hell are they gonna get designer mutts from!? Unless they have a grossly distorted view of what a reputable breeder is (most likely).
