Giving two weeks notice is not required, but it is recommended. By giving notice you allow your employer a little cushion to back-fill the vacancy and maintain a positive relationship in the event you ever wish to come back in some capacity.

Also leaving on a positive note will allow you to use that employer as a reference/history when you apply for another job somewhere else.

Unless there is some legitimate reason why you can’t give notice, I would recommend doing so. Legitimacy of reason could vary greatly on the context of your employer. For example, if you only have a summer job, but have just been told that you have a previously unknown opportunity to travel for 6 weeks to Europe starting in three days, that could be legitimate reason to give little notice. (You should still have an honest talk with your manager, however, and not just not show-up.)

But if you just don’t like the job, I would give the 2-weeks notice and suck it up for a bit. At least you earn a little cash, and can leave on a positive note.
